Cabinet Measurement Guide
A step-by-step guide to measuring your kitchen or bathroom for new cabinets.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a successful cabinet installation. Even small errors can lead to cabinets that don't fit, gaps, or costly modifications. Take your time and measure twice.
Tools You'll Need
- Tape measure (at least 25 feet)
- Pencil and paper (or our measurement worksheet)
- Laser measure (optional, for greater accuracy)
- Level (to check wall plumb)
- Camera or phone for reference photos
Step 1: Measure the Room
Start by measuring the overall dimensions of your room:
- Total wall length (left to right)
- Total wall height (floor to ceiling)
- Measure at multiple points — walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly straight
- Note any deviations greater than 1/4"
Step 2: Mark Obstacles
Record the location and dimensions of all permanent features:
- Doorways (including swing direction and trim)
- Windows (including height from floor and trim)
- Plumbing and gas lines
- Electrical outlets and switches
- Vents and ductwork
- Columns, bulkheads, and soffits
Step 3: Measure Appliances
- Refrigerator: width, depth, height (including clearance requirements)
- Range/cooktop: width and depth
- Oven: width, height, depth
- Sink: bowl dimensions and cutout size
- Dishwasher: width and depth
Step 4: Sketch Your Layout
Draw a simple floor plan view of your room. Label each wall (A, B, C, D) and mark all measurements on the sketch. Include north direction if possible.
Take photos of each wall and the overall room from multiple angles. These help our design team understand your space.
Step 5: Upload and Get Help
Once you have your measurements, sketches, and photos, upload them through our design request form. Our team will review your project and help build the right cabinet plan.
